In 1995, on September 5 and 6, respectively, Ripken played his 2,130th and 2,131st consecutive games and thereby tied and broke Lou Gehrig's record for longevity and is one of only two American Leaguers with 3,000 hits and 400 homers. On November 16, 2001 Cal was granted free agency.
